FAQ of the political project

The position database

What happens is two position are contradictory?

This situation should be rare: it is on average the same group of people that votes, so there should not be too much contradictions. However, it can happen same some positions are actually contradictory. So what? Is it not normal that a group of people take various positions that in the end are not completey logical? If this happens, the positions still enter into the database of positions (the database of positions reflects the opinion of a group, and thus it also reflects its contradictions!). If the problem becomes crucial, a some time, in a natural way, a member of the democratic experience will point out the contradiction and submit a vote to solve it. Remember, the democratic experience contains the means to solve its own problems (or contradictions).

What happens if someone submits a completely stupid questions ?

By default, every vote contains the answer “Reject vote”. If this answer wins the vote, the vote does not go into the database of positions. However, let us suppose that a “stupid” questions enters into the database. As the number of vote on this question grows, the answer “Vote rejected” will increase its score, until the vote is removed from the database.

Why is there a classification in the database of positions ?

First, this classification helps finding a particluar position of the democratic experience on a certain subject. New participants to the democratic experience can thus browse it easily, and make their opinion about the positions on the major themes and on their preferred subjects of interest.

Second, this classification facilitates delegation. It is possible for each participant to delegate all the vote corresponding to a certain category of the classification to a person of choice.

Elected persons

An elected person from a “classical” political party has a “normal” behaviour because he/she has the desire of being re-elected (this regulates the system). A candidate from the democratic experience, once elected, may not have the same desire, and may take decisions that are not in accordance with the position of the democratic experience.

This problem already exists. Nothing guarantees that an elected person from a “classical” political party follows the policy of this party. The reason why the problem seldom occurs is that in general, the candidates are well known by their own party. They have faced less important responsibilities before, were a potential abnormal behaviour would cause less harm. The same approach can apply within the democratic experience.

Woud not an elected person from the democratic experience sometimes face a contradiction between the position taken by the democratic experience and his/her own convictions?

This will happen. However, the participants of the democratic experience who run as candidates accept in advance that this sitution may occur, and commit themselves to always follow the position stored in the database.

Reliability of the vote

How is it guaranteed that there will be no pressure to vote against its own will (currently guarantee by the voting booth)?

It is not possible to put pressure on someone participating to the democratic experience. The reason is that you are allowed to change you vote. Let us imagine that a company obliges its employees to vote in a certain way at the companies’ location. Employees then only need to go back home or to the nearest internet access to change their vote.

How do we ensure that the vote is secret ?

An encryption mechanism ensure that no one can see the vote of a participant.

What guarantees it ?

The source code of the software used in the democratic expereience (DemExp) is available to anyone, and thus it is possible to see how it works and in particular to check that it is technically impossible to see how a person votes.

Condorcet voting

How to you handle permanent voting and submission of new candidate answers at the same time?

Actually, Condorcet voting implies that at some time the ballot is closed, and the winning candidate is computed. In the democratic experience, voting and winner computing are permanent. To the best of our knowledge, this situation has not been modeled or studied yet. We are currently investigating it, and we will be able to test it soon when the DemExp software is available.

What is the minimum age to participate?

This should be defined by a vote inside the democratic experience. One can imagine to start with a miimum age of 18, and then submit this question to the vote.

Who can particpate ?

Everyone. It is simply asked to the person that he/she exists! To this end, applicants will have to provide an extract of birth act. This kind of document exists in every country.

Can we be sure that a person will not register twice ?

This will not be 100% sure. However, in order to achieve this, fake extract of birth act should be forged, and this could easily be detected by consulting the institution that delivers them. Actually, there should not be more chances of multiple votes than in the current system.

What is the difference between representation (the current democratic system) and delegation ?

- when you choose a delegate, he/she only votes on a certain number of categories that you defined yourself. - you can see the votes he does for you, and if you are not happy, you can withdraw your delegation at anytime.

Other question

Is there anyone to control all this ?

No, there should not! In the democratic experience, no one has a voting power superior to someone else. The only prsons who have a special role are:

  • those who develop and maintain the DemExp software (of course these persons and the software are being chosen by vote)
  • those who are in charge of classifying the databse of positions (also chosen by vote)
  • the persons designated by vote inside the democratic experience to represent it at “classic” elections (town, legislative, presidential...) in all countries.

But these persons designated to run in “classical elections” are not entitled to take personnal positions, they only carry the message of the position of the democratic experience.

None of these persons has a superior power as compared to other members of the democratic experience. The only help the project to exist.
